Following last year’s news of the proposed merger between Teachers Health Group (incorporating UniHealth) and Teachers Union Health (TUH), the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has officially approved the merger, marking a significant milestone in the merger process.

The merger is not yet finalised, as several regulatory steps remain, including a vote by TUH Company Members in June. Our target merger date remains July 2025.

Find out more about what this means for you in our FAQs below:

Why is Teachers Health Group undertaking a merger?

The decision to merge with Teachers Union Health Fund (TUH) has been made to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of Teachers Health Group well into the future.

Together, Teachers Health Group will cover almost 500,000 people around Australia. A larger membership base will mean we will be better placed to withstand unexpected challenges and thrive in a highly competitive market. It will also see us offer better services, greater value and affordable products well into the future.

When will the merger take effect?

The merger is still subject to several regulatory steps, including TUH Company Member approval, which will take place in June. Following that, we expect the merger to take effect in early July 2025.

Why TUH?

Bringing our health funds together will unite the only two health funds in Australia focused on teachers, educators, nurses and midwives. With an enhanced national presence and strong brand positioning, we will cement our position as Australia’s sixth-largest health fund, and the largest not-for-profit industry-based fund.

What does it mean for members?

For UniHealth members, the merger won’t have any impact day-to-day – you’ll still enjoy the same member-focused products, benefits, support and service.

Will the UniHealth brand remain?

The identity of UniHealth will remain, and our commitment to supporting the health insurance needs of Australia’s teachers, education community, nurses and midwives and their families will remain as strong as ever.
